📰 News we're reading

• 'If you give a child a book': Donations help Broadwater Elementary students build a love for reading (ktvh.com) — Students at Helena's Broadwater Elementary each received 10 free books last year thanks to $16,380 in community donations through KTVH and the Scripps Howard Fund. With only about a third of U.S. fourth graders reading proficiently, Broadwater's principal and students say this annual book fair is boosting skills, confidence, and a love of reading—and they're inviting more local support.

• Helena Ranger District Planning Broadcast Burn (usda.gov) — A prescribed burn is planned for Thursday, Sept. 10, southwest of Helena along Grizzly Gulch to reduce wildfire risk on 280 acres of federal and private land. Residents and visitors should expect smoke if conditions allow the burn to proceed, and can monitor air quality online or contact the Helena Ranger District for updates and possible postponements.

• Comment period extended for proposed recreation fee changes (nbcmontana.com) — Helena-area residents now have until Oct. 2 to comment on proposed new and increased recreation fees for campgrounds and cabins on the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. With many fees collected staying local for maintenance and improvements, your feedback sent online or to the Helena forest office could influence what you pay at favorite nearby sites.
