2. Man surrenders after barricading himself in camper during Columbus standoff, police say (wowt.com) — A 63-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning after barricading himself in a camper during a police standoff near 12th Street and 19th Avenue in Columbus. Officers used chemical agents, called in State Patrol SWAT, and activated a hold-in-place at Scotus Central Catholic High School before the man ultimately surrendered without further incident.

3. Illinois man charged in fatal I-80 crash nearly a year later (wowt.com) — A Columbus man was killed last April in a crash on I-80 near Linoma Beach, and an Illinois truck driver has now been charged with reckless motor vehicle homicide. Investigators say phone records and dashcam video indicate the semi driver was on a video call and hit the Columbus man’s car at highway speed. The defendant is jailed on $250,000 bail with a May 4 court date.

4. The Big Event and its Volunteers Enjoy Another Successful Outing (panhandlepost.com) — A Columbus student was among nearly 340 volunteers who fanned out across Chadron for Chadron State College’s annual Big Event community service day. He says the strong town–college relationship inspires students to give back, as crews tackled projects in parks, museums, churches, and private yards that might otherwise have gone undone.

5. Pillen lets Nebraska Capitol security changes become law without signing, vetoes four more bills (newsfromthestates.com) — Columbus residents are represented in a key State Capitol debate, as local Sen. Mike Moser joins colleagues working under new security rules that Governor Jim Pillen allowed to become law without signing. The changes will tighten screening at the Capitol while still allowing some firearms, and Pillen also vetoed several Democratic-backed bills on housing accessibility, paid parental leave, Medicaid cost coverage, and foreign adversary reporting. Lawmakers return Friday for possible veto override votes.
