📰 News we're reading

• Kearney Regional Medical Center breaks ground on Oak Park Campus (ksnblocal4.com) — A major new Oak Park medical campus is coming to north Kearney, bringing primary care, urgent care, and full imaging services closer to nearby neighborhoods. Backed by Kearney Regional Medical Center and partners, the project responds to population growth and after-hours care gaps on the north side. Construction runs through next year, with opening planned for fall 2027.

• Several measures from area legislators indefinitely postponed in Nebraska Legislature (norfolkdailynews.com) — State lawmakers let several 2026 bills die, including one that would have formally designated the Kearney Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center for boys only, with limited emergency exceptions. Other shelved proposals ranged from inheritance tax changes for homicide victims’ estates to tighter rules on tax-increment financing, landlord regulations, sewer-backup claims, and consumer protections for home renewable energy systems.

• NU Board of Regents proposes 4.25% tuition increase for next academic year (nebraskapublicmedia.org) — University of Nebraska leaders are proposing an average 4.25% tuition hike next academic year, citing inflation and limited state funding, which could affect Kearney students and families. The system has already cut more than $40 million, including eliminating four degree programs at the University of Nebraska at Kearney to meet $4.5 million in reductions. Regents vote June 18.
