Barnegat Man Sentenced For Slaying Of His Parents

BARNEGAT, NJ — A Barnegat man will spend 30 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of his parents, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced.

Michael Mulgrew, 37, was sentenced to 30-year terms in New Jersey State Prison, with 30 years of parole ineligibility for the death of his parents, Eugene Mulgrew, 71, and Cheryl Mulgrew, 69.

The day he stabbed his parents to death was the same day they planned to take him to get psychiatric help, according to a police report obtained by Patch.

Police arrived at the Lincoln Avenue home around 11 a.m. Nov. 2 to assist medical personnel with performing a mobile outreach, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

As officers approached the house, they saw a man walking away, Billhimer said.

That man was Michael Mulgrew.

There was blood throughout the house, and the dead bodies of Cheryl and Eugene Mulgrew were found in the bedroom, with stab wounds to their upper torsos, Billhimer said.

After a search that locked down Barnegat, Stafford and Waretown schools, Michael Mulgrew was found in the area of West Bay Boulevard and Gunning River Road and was charged with murder. READ MORE: Barnegat Parents Sought Help For Son The Day He Killed Them: Cops
