Belleville Historical Society Spruces Up Iconic Monument In Newark
The Belleville Historical Society cleaned one of Newark's most significant monuments: the Founders Landing Monument.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — An iconic monument in Newark recently got spruced up by a historical society based in Belleville.
The Belleville Historical Society lent its efforts to clean the Founders Landing Monument, which commemorates the landing of Robert Treat and the first settlers of Newark on May 21, 1666.
According to the historical society, the monument has National Historic recognition, and was created by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore. Originally located on the bank of the Passaic River, development in the area caused the monument to be relocated and put into storage several times.
