Hazmat Situation Breaks Out After Fire In South Jersey, Officials Say

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, NJ — A fire at a building in Winslow Township on Sunday night led to an ammonia leak in the area, the Cherry Hill Fire Department said.

Hazmat and safety crews responded to a Kellanova plant (322 South Egg Harbor Rd.) and were joined overnight by their counterparts with Camden Hazmat and the Camden County Department of Public Safety.

The scene has been cleared, the department added, but with no information regarding any potential injuries.

Kellanova, formerly under the Kellogg's brand, is now owned by Mars.

Ammonia occurs naturally in the environment and is used in smelling salts, household cleaners, other cleaning products, and fertilizer for plants.

Anhydrous ammonia, or R-717, is also used in industrial refrigeration to store food products.

A leak of the corrosive chemical can be highly irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract.

Exposure can also lead to a buildup of fluid in the lungs.

Along with a burning sensation, swelling of the upper airway and pulmonary edema can lead to airway obstruction.

Skin contact that is longer than a few minutes can result in pain and corrosive injuries.

Patch has reached out to officials and Kellanova for more information surrounding the hazmat response and fire, and is yet to hear back.
