Interstate Exit Closed For 2 Months, Detouring Commuters In Camden Co.

Initial work will take place during the day before 24/7 closures take effect to expedite 'necessary' drainage repairs, officials said.

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ — A key exit on Interstate 76 has been closed for repairs that officials say will take about two months.

Exit 1D on I-76 westbound has been closed and detoured for drainage repairs in Gloucester City. The ramp becomes the right lane on Route 130 northbound, which is closed for about 0.1 miles.

The closure, which officials announced last week, took effect Monday. The detour is expected to last until late March, according to the NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

"The closure is necessary to replace a collapsed corrugated metal drainage pipe with a ductile iron pipe," NJDOT said in an advisory. "As part of the repair, sheeting will be installed to support the sound wall during construction. Initial work will take place during the day, and then work will continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week to expedite repairs."

The ramp will open sooner if work finishes earlier, NJDOT says.

One lane on Route 130 northbound will be maintained. The left exit from Route 130 northbound to I-76 westbound, which connects to the Ben Franklin and Walt Whitman bridges, will remain open.

The following detour is in place:

  • Motorists on I-76 westbound/Route 42 northbound wishing to take Exit 1D to Route 130 northbound will be directed to take Exit 1B/I-295 northbound/Trenton, which is about 1.25 miles before Exit 1D.
  • Stay right to continue onto I-295 northbound.
  • Take Exit 28/Route 168/Bellmawr/Runnemede/Mt Ephraim.
  • Turn left onto Route 168/Black Horse Pike northbound.
  • Take the ramp to Route 130 northbound.

The work is part of a $7.1 million project to improve drainage facilities throughout South Jersey.
