• Illegal Apartment Crackdown: Hawthorne Proposes New Rules For Basements, Attics (TAPinto Hawthorne) — Hawthorne officials are moving to tighten zoning rules on basements and attics to crack down on illegal apartments while reassuring residents that legally installed kitchens and bathrooms can stay. The proposed ordinance, introduced Oct. 21, would give inspectors more tools against unauthorized rental units, with a public hearing and final vote set for Nov. 16 at Borough Hall.
   

• 2026 girls soccer state tournament brackets (northjersey.com) — Hawthorne’s girls soccer team earned the No. 2 seed and will host No. 15 Kittatinny in the upcoming NJSIAA state tournament, with all games played at the higher seed. The brackets were finalized Oct. 29, and matches begin next week, giving local fans several chances to support Hawthorne’s playoff run close to home.
