My 8-year-old son, Christian Britting, is one of the most dynamic people I have ever met. He is kind, witty, smart, protective and cares about his family and friends more than anybody I know. At birth, Christian lost his hearing and must wear hearing aids throughout the day to ensure he can engage with his classmates and his teachers at the highest level.
I firmly believe that Christian needs to be recognized as a star student, as he was able to successfully create his own PowerPoint presentation and present to his classmates all about hearing loss, answer questions and teach his friends about the science behind the human ear. Christian worked with his resource teachers and his mommy on his presentation, and we worked together on his presentation style in front of the room. Since he is the only student at Woods Road School with hearing aids, many thought that he would feel uncomfortable talking about his situation in front of the class.
Christian was proud, dynamic and confident throughout his presentation and gained the respect and trust of his peers and his teachers, and is incredibly proud of himself for this accomplishment. Christian’s older brother, Robbie (a year older), joined in on Christian’s presentation and sat in the back of the room to offer his little brother support. Afterwards, Christian said that he was incredibly happy and thankful for the love that his brother shows him. Based on the way he described it, it seemed that Robbie being in the room was the best part of Christian’s presentation.
It is incredible to see children lead when the chips are sometimes stacked against them. When you see your child persevere beyond the expectations of other people, it warms your heart and makes you recognize how important it is to consistently provide your children with proper guidance while supporting them throughout their growth.
This situation enabled my son to empower his friends and feel confident in themselves. It also enabled him to connect on a deeper level with his older brother and continue to build an unbreakable bond. Most importantly, it showed Christian that he can do anything he wants as he grows into a young man.
The world is a better place because of Christian. This situation helped the world see it for themselves.
