📰 News we're reading

• Boy Gives His Spare Change To Hoboken Homeless Shelter (patch.com) — Hoboken's homeless shelter on Bloomfield Street just received a touching surprise donation: a young boy's bag of spare change that arrived right as demand for meals surged at month's end. Staff say they're serving hundreds of meals daily and urgently need food, clothing, housewares, and volunteers, all of which can be dropped off at the shelter from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

• Hoboken lawsuit that claims Bhalla took 'bribe' will depose Pellegrini from prison (hudsoncountyview.com) — A long-running lawsuit by cannabis applicant Nature's Touch against Hoboken and former Mayor Ravi Bhalla is moving forward, with a judge ordering the deposition of ex–city health director Leo Pellegrini from federal prison by mid-October. The case centers on disputed claims about how a cannabis license was handled and involves multiple Hoboken officials, with a trial currently scheduled for December 14.

• NJ Transit moved a record number of fans during World Cup and still lost money. A look at the numbers. (nj.com subscription) — Hoboken Terminal played a key role during the 2026 World Cup, hosting both displaced New York Penn Station commuters and fans heading to MetLife Stadium, even as NJ Transit lost nearly $4 million on tournament operations. The agency spent less than budgeted but saw ridership and fare revenue fall short, partly due to cheaper New York–subsidized buses and expanded American Dream parking. Officials say they'll plug the gap without service cuts or new surcharges.
