HOLMDEL, NJ — Over 900 people came together on Sunday to take part in the first annual Billy DiMaio 5K Run & Walk, an event held in honor of Billy DiMaio, a Holmdel resident who was killed in the New Year’s Day terrorist attack in New Orleans.

Billy DiMaio, 25, was a Holmdel High School graduate, notable lacrosse player and volunteer who was identified as one of the 14 people killed when a man drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s Day revelers on Bourbon Street in January 2025.

Following this attack, the Billy DiMaio Foundation was created in DiMaio’s memory, and today works to support individuals, families and communities across the U.S. impacted by mass violence by helping provide care, resources and hope in the aftermath of tragedy.

In a statement posted to their website, the DiMaio Family said over 900 people came together to take part in the race and thanked those who participated and gave their support.

"We truly can’t thank everyone enough for the support and love shown at the first annual Billy DiMaio 5K," the family said. "Seeing 900+ people and so many who traveled from all over come together to honor Billy in such a meaningful way is something we will never forget. It meant more than we can put into words."

"We are incredibly grateful to the Township of Holmdel, the Holmdel Police Department, and the Holmdel Fire Department for their support in making this event possible, along with everyone who worked behind the scenes and every single person who showed up to be there for Billy."

"This day would not have been possible without all of you, and we feel so lucky to be part of this community."

Not only did the local community, family and friends turn out for the 5K Run & Walk on Sunday, but local officials attended as well.

In an online post from Holmdel Township, officials said Mayor Rocco Impreveduto, Deputy Mayor Foster and Committeeman Romano were honored to be amongst the many race participants.

The township described the event as “honoring the legacy of one of our very best.”

“Billy DiMaio was more than just a standout student and athlete at HHS — as his father shared with us this morning, he was a young man with a unique gift for bringing people together,” the township said. “Today, that spirit was on full display as over 900 participants joined the inaugural Billy DiMaio 5K Run/Walk.”
