Holmdel Students Compete With The World's Best And Earn A Place Among Them
Holmdels Cosmic Chaos Team Advances to CERN's Global Top 50 From a Field of 4,501 Students Representing 89 Countries

HOLMDEL, NJ — Most high school students spend their senior year worrying about finals, prom, graduation, and college applications. The members of Cosmic Chaos spent theirs tackling particle physics, artificial intelligence, and a competition that drew 4,501 students from 89 countries.
In a year that saw a record breaking 712 proposals submitted to CERN's Beamline for Schools (BL4S) 2026 competition, Holmdel High School students Vittoria Rampulla, Brendan Lawlor, Hafza Osman, and Ronen Kravchik earned a place among the Top 50 teams in the world, an extraordinary achievement that placed these students on an international scientific stage.
Beamline for Schools, organized by CERN, challenges students to design real experiments that could be conducted using particle accelerator beamlines. The competition attracts some of the brightest young scientific minds from around the globe, making a Top 50 finish a remarkable accomplishment.

Competing under the team name Cosmic Chaos, the students proposed an experiment exploring the intersection of particle physics, mathematics, and artificial intelligence. Their project investigated how particle interaction data could be transformed into matrices and used to train AI models capable of identifying patterns hidden within complex experimental results.
While many students spend high school learning about scientific breakthroughs, these students were busy proposing the next ones.

The accomplishment is even more impressive when considering where these students are headed next. Vittoria Rampulla will attend Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, where she plans to study Mechanical Engineering and Robotics, pursuing her passion for designing, building, and solving real world challenges. Brendan Lawlor will attend The College of New Jersey, where he plans to study Mechanical Engineering, continuing his interest in innovation, technology, and hands on problem solving. Ronen Kravchik is headed to Rutgers University, where he plans to study Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, fields that play a critical role in advancing scientific and medical research. Meanwhile, Hafza Osman will return to Holmdel High School as a senior. Already recognized as part of one of the world's top student research teams, Hafza enters her final year with a rare distinction: having helped place Holmdel on the global scientific map before even graduating high school.
The team also extends its gratitude to the Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence (HFEE), whose support in funding a particle detector helped make this unique opportunity possible.
In an era increasingly defined by science, technology, engineering, and artificial intelligence, Cosmic Chaos serves as a reminder that innovation has no age limit and that some of tomorrow's greatest discoveries may already be taking shape in a Holmdel classroom.
For Vittoria, Brendan, Ronen, and Hafza, the journey from a Holmdel classroom to the global stage of scientific research is proof that curiosity, collaboration, and bold ideas can compete with the very best in the world. Whether their futures lead to engineering, robotics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or discoveries yet to be imagined, they have already demonstrated what is possible when talented students are given the opportunity to think big.
