CREATS International and the Stevens Center for Sustainability present a free community screening of Saving Walden's World, the award-winning documentary recently accepted for national distribution on PBS via NETA.
The film follows Jim Merkel, a former military engineer turned sustainability activist, as he raises his son, Walden, on an off-grid homestead in Maine and travels to Kerala (India), Cuba, and Slovenia to document women-led solutions that have bypassed the growth trap of the West. By prioritizing literacy, healthcare, and reproductive freedom, these societies have built stability and equity without sacrificing quality of life. The film has screened at 23 international film festivals and won 14 awards.
After the screening, stay for a Q&A with director Jim Merkel (via Zoom) and Dr. Willis Ochieng of New Jersey-based CREATS International, who recently co-hosted a UN High-Level Political Forum side event alongside Saving Walden's World to champion the economic transformation and leadership of rural women.
