📰 News we're reading

1. Jersey City Passes Budget With 15 Percent Tax Hike (patch.com) — Jersey City residents face a 15 percent property tax hike after the City Council approved an $886.4 million budget aimed at closing a large deficit. Mayor James Solomon's administration secured $120 million in state aid and cut more than $58 million in spending, saying the painful increase is needed to stabilize city finances and protect key services for local taxpayers.

2. Kennedy Boulevard safety projects underway in Jersey City (pix11.com) — Expect long-term construction along Kennedy Boulevard west of Journal Square as Hudson County rebuilds curbs and sidewalks, upgrades signals, and redesigns 35 intersections in Jersey City to cut crashes. Work, funded by a $6.8 million federal safety initiative, will run about 18 months on weekdays, bringing detours and sidewalk reroutes but aiming to make this crash-prone corridor safer and more accessible.

3. Guy announces Sept. 23 community meeting for Bus Rapid Transit in Jersey City (hudsoncountyview.com) — Hudson County is inviting residents to a September 23 Bus Rapid Transit community meeting at Hudson County Community College's library on Sip Avenue in Jersey City, where corridor options and designs will be presented. You'll be able to review recommendations, share how you travel along JFK Boulevard, and complete a multilingual survey that will help shape future bus-priority improvements in Bayonne and Jersey City.

4. Jersey City Fire Department promotes six captains to the rank of battalion chief (hudsoncountyview.com) — Six Jersey City Fire Department captains have been promoted to battalion chief, filling vacancies left by departing chief officers and strengthening supervision across operations, high-rise response, training, arson, and safety roles. City officials say the promotions, achieved through coordination with state agencies, will also bolster fire prevention inspections and are expected to be revenue-neutral for 2026 while improving overall public safety.
