Livingston Schools May Put $228M Upgrade Proposal Before Voters In 2027
Livingston voters could face a big question next year: Should taxes be raised to pay for a sweeping series of school upgrades?

LIVINGSTON, NJ — A $228 million school upgrade proposal continues to work its way through the pipeline in Livingston, although nothing is set in stone yet.
Earlier this week, the Livingston Public School District gave an update about the status of a proposed bond referendum, which would pay for construction and renovation projects across the district.
Livingston school administrators are considering putting the issue before voters – possibly as soon as April 2027.

The proposed work includes building new classrooms, adding a dedicated pre-K center, making athletic field improvements, performing building renovations and making security upgrades.
Some goals of the project include addressing increased student enrollment, creating extra space for academic programs and consolidating district school buses.

If it crosses the finish line, the referendum would come with a tax hike for local homeowners. An average Livingston homeowner with a property assessed at $729,272 would see their taxes rise by $1,015 to $1,130 annually, depending on the type of bonds issued, district administrators previously reported.

The district plans to continue early discussions about the proposal at the board of education meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
According to LPS administrators, the district architect will speak about updated projects that “reflect building priorities and community input.”
No referendum-related vote will take place at the meeting.
“This step is part of the district’s ongoing efforts to evaluate potential projects, explore options, solicit community engagement and balance school needs with the board’s responsibility to taxpayers,” administrators said.
The proposal remains in the planning stages, and discussions will continue as the board reviews information and considers potential options, the district added.
Livingston school administrators have launched an online resource page with information about the proposed referendum, which can be seen here.
