Fox Hollow Residents Say Fire Safety Should Come Before Tower Debate

WHITING — Residents of the Fox Hollow section of Manchester Township say a proposed communications tower has drawn attention away from what they consider a more immediate public-safety concern: wildfire risk.

Homeowners report that brush piles remain throughout portions of the neighborhood months after winter storms and cleanup efforts. Residents say they expected removal during the township’s spring cleanup period but continue to see large accumulations of debris as wildfire season progresses.

The concern comes as memories of the Jones Road Fire remain fresh throughout the Pine Barrens region.

Residents argue that the issue should not be viewed solely as a neighborhood matter. Fox Hollow sits within one of the most fire-prone regions of New Jersey, surrounded by forests that are part of a broader ecosystem stretching across multiple counties.

At the same time, residents continue to challenge the location of a proposed communications tower near homes. Township officials have described the project as a public-safety communications tower intended to improve emergency communications coverage.

Opponents question whether alternative locations were fully considered. Among the options frequently cited by residents is Crow’s Hill, which supporters believe could provide communications coverage while creating fewer concerns for nearby homeowners.

The dispute has also reopened discussion about Manchester’s environmental legacy. Residents point to decades of contamination concerns involving military installations, industrial facilities, and former mining operations as reasons they approach new projects with skepticism.

For many residents, the debate is not simply about a tower. It is about whether lessons from the past are being applied to decisions affecting the future of the Pine Barrens community.
