Officials credit stronger reserves, controlled debt, and efficiencies from the South Essex Fire Department partnership, calling the rating a strong report card on Maplewood's financial health.

South Essex Fire Dept and Mutual Aid Fight 4-Alarm Fire on Van Ness Court in Maplewood (villagegreennj.com) — A four-alarm fire on Van Ness Court in Maplewood Friday left one person treated for smoke inhalation, with firefighters rescuing one cat while another died. The South Essex Fire Department, Maplewood Police, and multiple neighboring towns worked together for over an hour to bring the blaze under control, and the cause remains under investigation.
   

3. Paper Mill Playhouse has appointed Casey Hushion as Associate Artistic Director (newjerseystage.com) — A Maplewood resident, director Casey Hushion, has been named Associate Artistic Director at nearby Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, bringing Broadway and regional theater experience to the role starting September 14. She'll help shape the theater's seasons, casting, new work development, and education and community programs, strengthening a major cultural institution many Maplewood residents already attend.
   

4. Foster Dog Scooby Is Looking For His Forever Home! (villagegreennj.com) — A Maplewood foster family is urgently trying to find a permanent home for Scooby, a 2-year-old, 50-pound German Shepherd–bully mix who's playful, well-trained, and loves squeaky tennis balls. After 250 days in foster care and formal training at Green Leaf Pet Resort, he's ready for adoption anywhere in the Northeast, with his Maplewood foster family available to answer questions.
