Morris Co. Bank Robber Nabbed By FBI, Officials Say

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A Massachusetts man accused of a bank robbery spree has been caught by the FBI, according to officials.

On June 27, around 2 p.m., police were called to the Chase Bank at 530 Myrtle Avenue in Boonton on reports of a robbery.

Authorities discovered that a masked man wearing sunglasses, gloves, and a suit and tie entered the bank holding a pistol. The masked man ordered everyone on the ground, took their phones, demanded money, and walked out with $12,000 in cash, police added.

The man fled in a grey/silver Honda Odyssey and has been hunted by authorities ever since.

An investigation led authorities to believe the man behind the mask was Joseph Sawyer, 52, of Townsend. He is also believed to be responsible for robbing the St. Mary’s Bank in Nashua, New Hampshire, on June 12.

After authorities learned Sawyer might have been hiding in Upstate New York, he was arrested by the FBI's Albany SWAT team Wednesday night.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Hampshire is prosecuting the case.
