Rabid Raccoon Found In North Jersey Town

The animal was found in town a week ago, authorities said.

SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ — Health officials from a Sussex County town are warning residents of a rabid raccoon that was recently found in the area.

On Wednesday, Hopatcong Police announced that a raccoon found in Byram Township had tested positive for the deadly disease.

The announcement said that the animal was found on April 30 on Stanhope Road.

Authorities are reminding residents to make sure that their pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.

Rabies is a contagious and deadly disease that can affect nearly all mammals. The disease is spread through bites, scratches, or exposure to an open wound.

Local officials are asking the public to be vigilant of the following behaviors in animals:

  • Unusual or aggressive behavior
  • Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
  • Difficulty walking or paralysis
  • Seizures
  • Wild animals appearing unusually friendly or active during daylight hours
