Bus Rider Beaten Unconscious In Newark, Police Search For Assailants

NEWARK, NJ — A group of assailants recently beat a man unconscious and robbed him after he got off a NJ Transit bus in Newark, police say.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the victim got off the bus around 12:10 a.m. on July 24 and began walking westbound on the 400-block of Springfield Avenue.

When a group of people – possibly juveniles – approached him, the bus rider tried to run past them, but they grabbed him by the shoulder and he fell to the ground in the parking lot of a nearby Dollar General store.

The group of assailants beat the man unconscious and robbed him of an iPhone, credit card, ID cards and his Beats headphones, police said.

The suspects fled from the scene and were captured on surveillance video running east on Springfield Avenue from Jacob Street, then through the Home Depot parking lot.

A bystander took the injured man to University Hospital after the beating. He was treated for a broken nose and facial fractures, police said.
