Mayor Ras Baraka and the City of Newark Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs has announced that applications for the 2026 Creative Catalyst Fund Awards are open. Individual artists, artist collectives, and arts and cultural organizations can apply beginning Tuesday, May 5 and remain available through Friday, June 5 at 11:59 p.m.

The Creative Catalyst Fund was created by Mayor Baraka and the City’s Director of Arts and Cultural Affairs fayemi shakur in January 2020 as the City of Newark's first-ever arts grant program. Since its launch at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, the Fund has distributed over 650 grants totaling nearly $4 million to artists and organizations for programs that have served hundreds of thousands of Newark residents and visitors and paid thousands of additional artists for their work supporting the projects. The fund provides support to cover a range of costs, enabling grantees to deliver meaningful creative experiences for Newarkers in every ward, and enriching arts activities in public spaces.

A recent analysis of Newark’s arts and cultural sector highlights its growing role in shaping the city’s identity and vitality. More than 80% of Essex County residents consider Newark to be a “City of the Arts,” and a majority report that the arts scene has encouraged them to engage more deeply with the city—spending more time in Newark, supporting local businesses, and bringing out-of-town visitors to experience the city’s offerings. At the same time, Newark’s cultural profile is rising nationally, with arts-related media coverage now outpacing peer cities by nearly four times per capita. Together, these findings point to the arts as a defining civic strength and reinforce the value of sustained public investment.

“The data is clear: the arts are one of Newark’s greatest strengths and a powerful driver of our city’s identity and growth,” said Mayor Baraka. “When we invest in artists and cultural organizations, we’re investing in vibrant neighborhoods and a city people are proud to call home.”

An allocation of $750,000 is made annually for the Creative Catalyst Fund, providing artists and cultural organizations with flexible grant support for arts and cultural activities.

The Fund also enables artists and organizations to serve some of the city’s most vulnerable communities. Two-thirds of grantee organizations report that at least a quarter of their audience lives below the poverty line, bringing free and affordable arts programming to those who might not otherwise have access. Nearly 60 percent of grantee organizations serve a similarly high percentage of at-risk youth, providing creative outlets, mentorship, and opportunities that inspire and empower Newark’s next generation.

“Flexible funding support is critical for artists and cultural groups to do their best work,” said City of Newark Arts and Cultural Affairs Director fayemi shakur. “General operating funding from government, foundations, and private donors helps keep the doors open—supporting staff, maintaining spaces, and sustaining the day-to-day work that allows the creative sector to serve Newark’s communities and expand access to the arts.”

A selection committee composed of community representatives, city staff, and arts experts will evaluate the submissions. A virtual information session about how to apply will be offered to guide applicants through the process.

Prospective applicants will choose between two grant streams, based on eligibility:

  • General Operating Support for Newark-based non-profit arts and cultural organizations with annual operating budgets up to $3 million. Grants range from $2,500 to $25,000. Awards over $5,000 require matching funds.
  • Artist Fellowships for Newark-based individual artists or artist collectives working in any artistic discipline are eligible. Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000, with no matching requirement.

The Creative Catalyst Fund is administered by the City's Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs in partnership with Invest Newark, and was designed and facilitated with the help of Bloomberg Associates, a philanthropic consultancy that advises cities around the world and is part of Bloomberg Philanthropies.
