Residents can catch stars like Gregory Porter, Ben Vereen, Charles Lloyd, and local youth ensembles, plus the Sarah Vaughan vocal competition honoring Newark's own jazz legend.
   

3. Some 41,000 Newark, N.J. students head back to school: "I want to get all A's" (cbsnews.com) — More than 41,000 Newark students are heading back to school as the district enters year seven of a 10‑year transformation plan that's boosted enrollment, graduation rates, and cut chronic absenteeism. Families will see stricter cellphone rules, more rigorous academics, and new career pathways like film and media programs tied to growing studio development in the South Ward.
   

4. George Clinton Receives Key to Newark During Hometown Celebration (classixphilly.com) — Newark just honored hometown funk legend George Clinton with a key to the city during a youth empowerment summit at Avon Avenue School, where he once studied. Students, families, and educators joined the celebration, which mixed music, financial literacy, and creative ownership lessons, capped by a community cookout and back‑to‑school activities for neighborhood kids.
   

5. Cardinal Tobin Appoints Christine James as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Newark (insidernj.com) — Catholic life in Newark is getting new leadership as Cardinal Joseph Tobin appoints longtime finance executive and lay church leader Christine James as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Newark. The Montclair native brings decades of management experience and deep local church involvement to oversee administration serving 1.3 million Catholics across Essex, Bergen, Hudson, and Union counties.
