Teen Rescued After Seizure At Public Pool In Newark

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Lifeguards and emergency responders rescued a teen after he had a seizure while swimming at a public pool in Newark on Thursday morning, authorities said.

Newark police responded to the Marquis “Bo” Porter Rec Center on Lyons Avenue at 9:52 a.m. after getting a call that a 13-year-old, non-verbal male with autism had suffered a seizure while in the pool.

The recreation center’s personnel and lifeguards removed the teen from the water and began life-saving measures.

The youth was alert and breathing when transported to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for evaluation and treatment, police said.

Mayor Ras Baraka commended the lifeguards and emergency responders for their “training and professionalism.”

“Thanks to the immediate response of two of our lifeguards who sprang into action immediately, he received prompt care and is now safe,” Baraka said of the teen, who was participating in one of the city’s summer programs at the time.

No additional information was immediately available.
