Funeral Home In New Brunswick To Become Italian Restaurant, Banquet Hall
The building will not be torn down; it will become a restaurant and the second floor converted into a banquet space.
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A local small-business owner wants to convert an existing New Brunswick funeral home into a sit-down Italian restaurant and banquet hall.
Sam Algar currently has an application before the New Brunswick Planning Board to convert the existing Boylan funeral home at 188 Easton Avenue into a sit-down Italian restaurant. It will have outdoor seating and a second-floor banquet room, according to Planning Board documents.
Algar owns nearby Sahara Middle Eastern restaurant at 165 Easton Avenue, according to MyCentralJersey. He owns several properties in that area and along Easton Avenue. Here is a profile and interview with Algar.

The garage portion of the existing funeral home building will be converted into a kitchen. Algar is not planning to make any additions to the structure, but its windows and doors will be updated and relocated. The existing access to Easton Avenue and Guilden Avenue will be maintained.
The New Brunswick Planning Board will hear his application at their next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. May 11 in Council chambers of New Brunswick City Hall.
