📰 News we're reading

1. Redevelopment Of Wonderland Site Continues To Be Discussed In Ocean City (patch.com) — Ocean City officials are moving cautiously on the future of the former Wonderland site, meeting in closed session to discuss hiring litigation counsel without taking formal action. Councilman Keith Hartzell stressed they are at the very beginning of the redevelopment process and will craft their own plan with community input, while former Councilman Pete Madden urged a hotel project and less litigation. Council unanimously adopted a report outlining next steps for Boardwalk redevelopment, including the Wonderland property.

2. GLDD Ocean City, NJ Beach Replenishment Project is Now Complete (dredgewire.com subscription) — Beach replenishment work along Ocean City's north-end beaches is now finished, with equipment removal and related closures at the Morningside Road dune crossover and part of Beach Road continuing for about two weeks. All beaches remain open, and residents can check which Ocean City Beach Patrol stands are guarded as the city enjoys 1.6 million cubic yards of new protective sand.

3. The ultra-quiet Atlantic hurricane season is setting records, thanks to El Niño (inquirer.com) — Ocean City has so far escaped even a tropical storm threat this year, as an unusually strong El Niño is shredding Atlantic systems and delaying the season's first hurricane to record-setting territory. Experts explain how powerful upper-level winds and earlier Saharan dust have muted storm formation, while cautioning that only one late-season storm could still affect the Jersey Shore.

4. Ocean City solemnly observes 25th anniversary of 9/11 attacks (ocnjdaily.com) — Ocean City residents gathered outside the fire department on Asbury Avenue to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11 with solemn bell ringing, wreath-laying, and reflections from local fire, police, and civic leaders. Speakers, including Fire Chief Bernard Walker and Mayor Jay Gillian, emphasized honoring the fallen while remembering the unity, kindness, and resilience that followed the attacks.

5. New Jersey's 119 Year Old Amusement Park is Shutting Down and Put to Sale (shorenewsnetwork.com) — Ocean City readers are reminded how quickly beloved Shore attractions can vanish, as the story links Clementon Park's sudden closure and sale with the earlier loss of Gillian's Wonderland Pier on the Boardwalk. The piece traces Clementon's 119-year history, its previous rescue from foreclosure, and the owners' hope that a new buyer will preserve the park rather than redevelop the land.
