📰 News we're reading

• Sherrill pushes targeted tutoring proposal in Franklin school visit (newjerseyglobe.com) — Piscataway’s own state Sen. Bob Smith is backing Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s $15 million plan to expand high-impact tutoring across New Jersey schools. During a visit to Franklin Township, Sherrill highlighted strong early gains in Camden and Elk districts, arguing that evidence-based tutoring can help students catch up academically as lawmakers race to finalize the state budget.

• When a team bus couldn't make it to the baseball state final, team got unexpected help (nj.com subscription) — High school baseball fans saw some unexpected drama even before first pitch at Rutgers’ Bainton Field in Piscataway, when St. Augustine’s team bus got a flat near Exit 9 and parents plus Delbarton’s bus shuttled players the final miles. The Non-Public state final was delayed just over half an hour, but star pitcher Alex Weingartner still made it on time for the rematch showdown.

• How the death of 'The Line' is reshaping NJ township councils and county boards (gothamist.com) — Piscataway residents just saw a major political shakeup, as school board vice president Shantell Cherry defeated an incumbent in the Democratic primary for township council with backing from the Piscataway Progressive Democratic Organization. Her win, and similar upsets elsewhere, show how ending New Jersey’s controversial “county line” ballot design is empowering reform-minded local candidates and weakening traditional party machines.
