4 Police, Firefighters Hospitalized After 3-Alarm Blaze Destroys Bergen County Home

DEMAREST, NJ — Four firefighters and police were hospitalized on Tuesday after a three-alarm fire destroyed a house in Demarest, officials said.

The Demarest Fire Department said that firefighters from Creskill and Demarest sped to Woodland Road around 3:44 p.m.

They found "heavy fire showing from the second floor and attic area and filled out the second alarm."

Creskill firefighters used a deck gun to extinguish the exterior fire, but the blaze grew to three alarms, Demarest firefighters noted in a social media post.

Fire Chief John McLoughlin told Patch that three police officers and a firefighter were treated and released from local hospitals.

The house has been determined to be “uninhabitable," he said. The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire, he noted, although the owners were living there.

The cause is undetermined and not suspicious, he said.

Fire companies remained on the scene until before 7 p.m., the social media post said.

"Thank you to all of our mutual aid departments for helping on scene and covering the Borough," said the post. The fire remains under investigation.
