• Funk Band Founder From Ridgewood And Brown University Has Died At 51 (patch.com) — Ridgewood readers are remembering Chris Smith, a legally blind Ridgewood High School Class of 1993 graduate who went on to play sports, attend Brown University, and found the touring funk rock band "Smit-Haus." Smith, celebrated by his family for helping others "see a little better," died last month at 51, and his obituary highlights his wide-ranging achievements and impact.
   

• Ridgewood Council Advances No-Knock Registry Ordinance (tapinto.net) — Ridgewood officials have advanced an ordinance to create a voluntary "No Knock Registry," letting residents formally block most door-to-door solicitors from coming to their homes. The measure, which includes fines for violations and exemptions for legally protected canvassing, passed first reading and heads to a public hearing and possible final vote on Sept. 9, 2026.
   

• As flag football booms, title-winning high school coach makes surprising exit (usatoday.com) — Ridgewood's powerhouse girls flag football program is losing head coach Mickey McDermott, who helped launch the team in 2021 and guided the Maroons to three state titles. He's stepping down to pursue growing professional flag opportunities and family time, underscoring how fast the sport is evolving as New Jersey sanctions it statewide and the Olympics loom.
