Fair Haven Police Remind Residents Of New E-Bike Law Taking Effect

FAIR LAWN, NJ — The Fair Haven Police Department is reminding residents that New Jersey's updated e-bike law will take effect on July 19,bringing new requirements for riders and electric bicycles.

According to the department, riders must be at least 15 years old to operate an e-bike. Riders ages 15–16 will need a special e-bike/motorized bicycle license, while those 17 and older must have a valid driver's license.

Under the new law, e-bikes will be classified as motorized bicycles, rather than regular bicycles. All e-bikes must be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), riders must wear a helmet, and owners are required to carry liability insurance.

Police say that e-bikes that are not licensed, registered, insured, and operated by a properly licensed rider will be considered illegal. Violations may result in fines starting at $50.

The Fair Haven Police Department encourages residents to review the new requirements and consult the New Jersey MVC's e-bike resources before the law takes effect.
