Joe Territo will discuss how local newspapers strengthen civic life, how advances in technology have transformed community journalism, and why the Corporation for New Jersey Local Media (CNJLM) recently consolidated its individual town newspapers into county-wide print editions. He will also explain how residents and organizations can help support local journalism and submit news tips and event announcements for coverage. Joe is CEO and Publisher of the Corporation for New Jersey Local Media. He began his journalism career as an intern at the Roxbury Register, later becoming a reporter for The Star-Ledger and a founding editor of NJ.com. He later held executive positions with Advance Local and other digital media organizations before joining CNJLM
The Summit Area Old Guard is a social, educational, and recreational fellowship of active men of retirement age, founded in 1930. We hear presentations most Tuesday mornings in an auditorium in New Providence, and we have many other activities including discussion groups, sports and outdoor groups, and celebrations. Our dues are minimal, and members volunteer for all aspects of the operation. Our motto is "Come for the programs. Stay for the friends." FANWOOD, N.J. — Why We Dance, a community initiative organized by Candace Waller, will host a free, open-level AfroBeats dance workshop on Sunday, August 30, at 3 p.m. at the Forest Road Park Building, 154 Forest Road, Fanwood, N.J. The event will bring residents together through dance while promoting fitness, wellness, health education and community connection through the arts.
Led by Shari LP, a New Jersey-based choreographer, dancer and dance educator with more than seven years of teaching experience, the workshop is designed for dancers of all levels, including those with little or no previous dance experience. The event will also feature refreshments and crafts.
Shari has taught throughout the tri-state area at dance studios, schools and community organizations, including Broadway Dance Center in New York City. As a choreographer, she has created work for music videos, live performances, festivals, showcases and independent artists.
Her passion for teaching extends beyond choreography. Shari is dedicated to helping dancers move from self-doubt to self-expression by creating an environment where movement feels accessible, empowering and joyful. She encourages students to build confidence, develop their artistry and connect with others through dance.
“Dance is more than learning steps,” Shari says. “It is about finding your voice, building confidence and connecting with others through movement.”
Through Why We Dance, Waller aims to make dance and wellness accessible to the community while creating opportunities for people to connect through the arts. The August 30 workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to experience AfroBeats dance in a welcoming, supportive environment while learning about the physical, social and creative benefits of movement.
The event is part of Waller’s broader commitment to using the arts to encourage healthy lifestyles, wellness and community engagement.

Congregation Beth Israel

Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) in Scotch Plains will hold its annual family service on Erev Rosh Hashanah, Friday evening, September 11, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.This child-friendly service is free and open to the community. 
The one-hour service will usher in the Jewish New Year and Shabbat with songs, stories and prayers. Rabbi Howard Tilman and Cantor Jacob Greenberg will officiate.
“The Rosh Hashanah family service is a beautiful way to begin the holiday together as a Jewish community,” said Rabbi Tilman. “Welcoming people of all backgrounds, experience levels and ages reflects so much of what we strive to be. The New Year is a time of hope, possibility, and renewed connection to our identity, and we invite the wider community to join in this special Rosh Hashanah celebration.”
There is no need for synagogue membership or tickets to attend CBI’s family service. However, registration is required at cbinj.org/event/erevrh5787
