Thursday Night's Secaucus BOE Meeting Will Be At Huber Street School

The budget for next school year will be presented to the public at Thursday night's meeting.

SECAUCUS, NJ — The location was changed for Thursday night's Secaucus school board meeting:

The meeting will now be held in the gym at Huber Street Elementary. It will begin at 7 p.m. (It was originally supposed to be held in the high school Performing Arts Center.)

The budget for next school year will be presented to the public at Thursday night's meeting. Superintendent Mark Toback will ask the school board to increase the school tax levy by 7.2 percent this year, as Patch reported last week.

The Secaucus school district is in a budget crisis and needs to raise $6.6 million in revenue over the next three years, Toback announced last week.

The Secaucus school district will also have cuts, he said.

At the special board meeting last Thursday, April 30, held in the PAC, a mom asked Toback if there will be staffing cuts. Toback responded that the district will talk more about that at their meeting Thursday night, May 7.

Toback said last week:

"We can't really talk about that. We have another board meeting in a week. At that meeting, we'll talk about staffing for the upcoming year ... There are cuts. There has to be ... I would not say that we have a hiring freeze, but if there are opportunities for the district to not fill positions in a budget crisis, then certainly we would take that."

Classroom sizes could also potentially be impacted, he said.
