I-78 West On-Ramp Reopens As $6.1M Bridge Work Wraps Up In Somerset County

The King George Road southbound ramp to I-78 westbound reopened as the last work finished on the project.

WARREN, NJ — The on-ramp from King George Road southbound onto Interstate 78 westbound reopened Monday.

This marked the completion of the I-78 westbound Bridge over the Tributary of Dead River replacement project in Warren Township.

Reopening the ramp and acceleration lane from King George Road southbound onto I-78 westbound was the last remaining work on the project, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation(NJDOT).

The reopening marks the end of a $6.1 million federally funded bridge replacement job in Warren Township.

Earlier in the project timeline, all three lanes on I-78 westbound were shifted back to their original configuration on Sept. 4 on the newly constructed bridge. That traffic change came before the final ramp and acceleration lane work was finished.

The project replaced the bridge superstructure and deck on the I-78 westbound Bridge over Tributary of Dead River.

According to the NJDOT, precast deck panels were used to minimize construction time. The work also included guiderail upgrades and repaving on a portion of the highway.

All three lanes on I-78 were maintained throughout the majority of construction. That approach helped keep traffic moving during most of the work on the bridge and surrounding roadway.

The NJDOT states that the bridge work supports the Sherrill Administration’s commitment to improving New Jersey’s transportation network by maintaining roads and bridges in a state of good repair.
