The Bockoven brothers owned the land that is now the Great Swamp. These German immigrants enlisted and served in the American Revolution and lived amicably with the Lenape.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) &nbsp;is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, service organization. Any woman, 18 and over, who is descended from a man or woman who aided American independence during the Revolutionary War, may join the DAR.
Members of Elizabeth Snyder-Continental Chapter are planning to celebrate America 250 with a variety of projects, including attending naturalization ceremonies, dedicating historic monuments, hosting public programs, creating history displays, participating in community events including the Somerset County 4-H Fair, attending state DAR events, and more.
Elizabeth Snyder-Continental Chapter was founded in 1896 and serves areas of Somerset, Middlesex and Union counties. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month, 7-9 p.m., in Green Brook, March through May, and September through November, with an anniversary luncheon and winter meeting in January 
The chapter sponsors the Pis-Cat-A-Qua Society of the Children of the American Revolution, open to girls and boys descended from a Revolutionary War Patriot, from birth to age 21.

Gina's Tennis World will celebrate the grand opening of its third court on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 649 Springfield Avenue.
The addition comes with a new sign on Springfield Avenue that owner Gina Genovese hopes will finally put the longtime tennis club on the map for residents who may not have known it was there.
The grand opening will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Angie Devanney at 11 a.m. From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., guests can try out HEAD demo rackets against a ball machine and test their skills by hitting targets for prizes.
Throughout the event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests can take photos with life-sized cutouts of tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. A raffle will give one lucky winner the chance to take a cutout home.
"After being in business for 43 years in Berkeley Heights, I am so excited to have the opportunity to have more kids and adults learning to love the game of tennis," Genovese said. "I still enjoy teaching even more than I did in 1983."
Tanvi Silvester, a former Gina's Tennis World player now in college, said the club's environment made all the difference in her experience learning the sport.
"I'd recommend Gina's Tennis World because it's such a friendly environment," Silvester said. "Starting a new sport can be intimidating at any age, and the environment you learn in plays a huge role in how much you end up loving the game. Gina, Wendy and the entire staff are so welcoming and kind. They make you want to come back and fall in love with tennis."
Julia Jarvis, a student and player at the club for 22 years, echoed that sentiment.
"Gina's Tennis World has always been community-focused, where everyone feels like family," Jarvis said. "It's not an ultra-competitive, toxic or intimidating culture, and it's a safe place to learn. This new chapter will let her share her gift with even more people, and I'm truly so excited for her and her world."

About Gina's Tennis World Gina Genovese founded Gina's Tennis World in 1983 after coming off the women's professional tour, quickly attracting nationally ranked players — including, in one year, 12 boys who were ranked No. 1 on their high school teams. For more than four decades, she has taught players ages 5 to 80 at every skill level, working alongside fellow instructors Coach Wendy and Coach Phil for more than two decades. She is now teaching a second generation of students and says she can't wait to welcome a third.

Ted Blum 4-H Center of Somerset County, 310 Milltown Rd, Bridgewater, NJ, 08807

Families are invited to the Somerset County 4-H Open House on Thursday, September 24, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Ted Blum 4-H Center, 310 Milltown Road, Bridgewater, to learn about all that 4-H has to offer. The 4-H Youth Development Program is offered through the Cooperative Extension System of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is one of the oldest and largest youth organizations in America, with 6 million members. 4-H is open to any child from K-13 (one year out of high school). Young people may select from a broad menu of local 4‑H programs developed by educators that offer hands-on, learn-by-doing, opportunities in agriculture, STEM, health, civic engagement and the arts.
The Open House features representatives from the almost 80 clubs available in Somerset County through Rutgers Cooperative Extension. There is also information on both short- and long-term volunteer opportunities for adults.

4-H Prep, also known as Cloverbuds, is open to grades K-3 and offers a mix of activities. Traditional 4-H clubs, for grades 4-13, focus on a particular project area. A few of the projects currently offered in Somerset County are robotics, food &amp; nutrition, beekeeping, gardening, rabbits, sewing, poultry, model trains, twirling, remote control cars, archery and more.Somerset County 4-H also has a Seeing Eye Puppy program. In a unique partnership with The Seeing Eye based in Morristown, N.J., 4-H’ers are provided with potential service dog puppies. With the help of family, trained volunteers and their club, 4-H members raise and socialize the pups and provide basic training. The dogs are then returned to The Seeing Eye at 14-16 months of age to continue their training to become Seeing Eye service dogs for the blind and visually impaired.&nbsp; For a list of 4-H clubs and to learn more, visit 4HisTOPS.org.
