Driver Slams Into 2 Police Cars In South Jersey: Authorities

GLOUCESTER COUNTY, NJ — Two police SUVs were left disabled after a driver hit them from behind early Thursday, the Washington Township Police Department said.

At around 1:40 a.m., officers stopped a driver along Route 42 between Exits 7 and 7B.

While pulled over, they learned that one person in the car had outstanding warrants and took them into custody.

One of the officers then went back into his vehicle to finish paperwork while the other stayed outside.

A 63-year-old Deptford man driving on the highway then hit both vehicles from behind and was left with minor injuries, authorities said.

Neither officer was hurt.

The police vehicles, however, were significantly damaged and unable to be driven.

"Damaged police cars can be replaced. Our officers cannot," the department added.

New Jersey State Police is handling the case into the crash. Details regarding any potential charges were not immediately clear.
