Early Morning 2-Alarm Fire Leaves Family Homeless In Westfield

WESTFIELD, NJ — An early morning two-alarm fire broke out in Westfield, leaving residents homeless.

On Tuesday at around 3 a.m., a house fire was reported on Kirkview Circle.

Westfield Fire Department units arrived at 3:05 a.m. to find a two-and-a-half-story single-family home with heavy smoke and fire showing from the first floor, said Westfield Fire Chief Michael Duelks.

Firefighters began an "an aggressive interior fire attack" and searched the home to ensure everyone had safely evacuated.

The fire escalated to two alarms, bringing help from other fire companies including Springfield Ladder, Plainfield Engine, Summit Engine, and Cranford Engine.

Off-duty members of the Westfield Fire Department were also called to help.

Mountainside Ladder, Linden Engine, Scotch Plains Engine also came for town coverage.

The Town of Westfield, NJ Police Department aided with street closers, traffic, crowd control and scene security. The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, along with emergency medical services from around the county, helped in providing firefighter rehabilitation.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was under control at 4:05 a.m, with firefighters remaining at the house into the morning hours.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Westfield Fire Prevention Bureau, the Westfield Police Department, and the Union County Fire Investigation Task Force.

The Westfield Construction Official deemed the home uninhabitable.

"The Westfield Fire Department reminds everyone that working smoke alarms save lives. Make sure that your smoke alarms are tested monthly and are less than 10 years old," said Duelks.
