Man Killed In 5-Vehicle Crash On I-78 In Union County

Evening rush hour traffic came to a standstill after a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 78 in Union Township.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — A 44-year-old Harrison man was killed in a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 78 in Union Township during Thursday evening’s commute, according to New Jersey State Police.

The crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. on the eastbound side of I-78 near Exit 52 in Union Township and caused significant traffic delays across the area.

Authorities said an International box truck struck the back of a Nissan SUV, setting off a chain reaction involving a GMC SUV, Jeep SUV, and Honda passenger vehicle.

A back-seat passenger in the Honda, identified as Victor R. Fajardo, 44, of Harrison, died in the crash, State Police said.

The driver of the Nissan suffered moderate injuries, while the driver of the Honda suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
