June is Aphasia Awareness Month

June is Aphasia Awareness Month. Aphasia is an acquired language disorder resulting from a stroke, brain injury, tumor, dementia, or other neurological conditions, which can affect a person’s ability to speak, understand, read, or write.

To recognize this month, Jessica Sharon and Lindsay Shields, Speech-Language Pathologists at Hackensack Meridian JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute recently hosted a picnic outside the Department of Speech and Audiology. Patients and their loved ones gathered on a beautiful June day to share their experiences and enjoy food and laughter together.

The Department of Speech and Audiology at JFK Johnson provides individualized assessments, therapy, and support groups for patients and caregivers. Additionally, our new Aphasia Reconnect Program offers customized treatment for those in chronic stages of recovery, utilizing technology to maximize quality of life.
