PETITION: Restore Funding to CILs!

Centers for Independent Living (CILs) are community-based, nonprofit organizations that serve individuals of all ages and all disabilities across New Jersey. Unlike many providers, the 12 CILs in NJ are cross-disability and lifespan-based, meeting people where they are and supporting them at every stage of life.

WHAT WE DO

CILs provide five federally mandated core services:

• Independent Living Skills

• Peer Support

• Information & Referral

• Advocacy (individual & systems)

• Transition Services

But our work goes far beyond these core services…

CILS ALSO PROVIDE

• Employment preparation and job readiness

• Life skills and independent living training

• Transportation and driving support

• Assistance with food insecurity and basic needs

• Recreation opportunities

Community integration and real-world problem solving

This is just a sampling of what CILs offer. No two CILs are the same, as each organization responds to the unique needs of its community.

WHAT’S AT RISK

The proposed elimination of the $3 million state budget line item threatens:

• Access to critical, community-based supports

• Independence for people with disabilities

• Stability of services across New Jersey

At the same time, federal funding through the Administration for Community Living is uncertain, increasing the urgency for state investment.

WHY IT MATTERS

• CILs help people live independently, make their own choices and avoid institutionalization.

• CILs support employment, self-sufficiency, and community inclusion

• CILs reduce long-term public costs by preventing crisis and institutional care

In a state budget of billions, $3 million is a small investment, but without it, the cost to people with disabilities and their families is immeasurable.
