Rabies Alert Issued In Middlesex County

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — A raccoon tested positive for rabies in South Plainfield, said the Middlesex County Office of Health Services.

The raccoon was found in the vicinity of Orchard Drive and Geary Lane.

Last Thursday, August 20, a South Plainfield resident trapped a raccoon on their property and contacted a wildlife rehabilitator.

The rehabilitator took the raccoon to their facility, where it later died. The raccoon was taken to the New Jersey Department of Health laboratory where it was reported August 24 that the animal was positive for rabies. There were no human exposures and no animal exposures to the raccoon.

This is the second rabid animal confirmed in Middlesex County for 2026 and the first rabid animal in South Plainfield.
