📰 News we're reading

1. Delays in trash pickup to continue for several days in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County and Rio Rancho (newsradiokkob.com) — Albuquerque residents should expect trash pickup delays for several days because heavy rain made a key landfill access road unsafe for collection trucks. City crews will run from 7 a.m. to dusk, and people are urged to keep cart lids closed and call 311 if overflow becomes a problem, while Rio Rancho and Bernalillo County customers can track updates on Waste Management's website.

2. Application #2080-M1, East Mountains Transfer Station (cabq.gov) — Bernalillo County is seeking a permit modification for the East Mountains Transfer Station that would add a second diesel grinder while keeping total grinding hours capped at 800 per year. Once annually, a grinder could be moved for a one-day Christmas tree or green waste event at either the North Valley Raymond G. Sanchez Community Center or South Valley Multipurpose Senior Center in Albuquerque. Residents can submit comments on the proposal through November 2.

3. New law bans cryptocurrency kiosks in Albuquerque (abqjournal.com subscription) — Albuquerque has officially banned cryptocurrency kiosks citywide, giving businesses 45 days to remove more than 100 machines or face fines and possible license revocation. City leaders and AARP say the kiosks have enabled scams that cost New Mexicans, especially seniors, millions of dollars, even as some councilors questioned impacts on legitimate users.

4. Albuquerque preps to prevent mosquitoes from nesting after heavy rains (krqe.com) — After record-breaking rain, Albuquerque crews are racing to treat standing water across the city, including around Balloon Fiesta grounds, to keep mosquitoes from spreading West Nile virus. Health officials say the season is lasting longer, with 17 recent human cases and two deaths statewide, and urge residents to report large pools of water to 311 until the first hard freeze.

5. Albuquerque breast cancer support group offers hope and healing for women (kob.com) — Women in Albuquerque living with breast cancer can join Radiant Healing Together, a local program offering support groups, holistic services, and classes at sites including The Heritage House in Corrales. Organizers say the free community helps women cope emotionally, build friendships, and access resources, with registration and details for next weekend's fundraising gala available online.
