Westmoreland Sanctuary

Turn Invasive Vines into Handcrafted Baskets at Westmoreland Sanctuary
Join Westmoreland Sanctuary for a unique hands-on basket-making workshop that combines creativity, traditional skills, and conservation. Participants will learn how to weave beautiful, functional baskets using invasive wisteria vines collected from the sanctuary's forests.
While admired for its cascading purple flowers, invasive wisteria can cause significant ecological damage by strangling trees, blocking sunlight, and crowding out native plants that wildlife depends on. By removing these aggressive vines and repurposing them into baskets, participants will help support habitat restoration while discovering the value of natural materials found in our local landscape.
Participants will leave with a completed basket, a new appreciation for natural crafts, and a deeper understanding of how stewardship and sustainability can work hand in hand.
All materials will be provided. No prior basket-weaving experience is necessary.

Join us at Westmoreland Sanctuary for an exciting hands-on program where kids become animal caretakers for a day. This fun and interactive experience gives children the opportunity to learn what it takes to care for the different animals housed at Westmoreland and ultimately gain a connection with and a deeper appreciation for animals and nature. 

Under the supervision of a Westmoreland Sanctuary animal caretaker, kids will:<ul><li>Meet the animals: Get an up-close look at our resident reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals while learning about their care and their role in educating the public on wildlife conservation.</li><li>Animal care basics: Help with the daily routine of caring for the animals. Including cleaning enclosures, maintaining the health of our animals and providing enrichment.</li><li>Feed the animals: Learn about the dietary needs of the Sanctuary's animal ambassadors. Learning about their diets helps us understand their behavior and ensure they stay healthy.</li></ul>

Dragonflies
 and damselflies are among the most ancient and accomplished aerial 
predators on Earth. Inhabiting wetlands, streams, ponds, and marshes, 
these insects play an important role in freshwater ecosystems and serve 
as valuable indicators of environmental health.
In our new Dragonfly and Damselfly Workshop,
 Naturalist Tait Johansson will introduce participants to the diversity,
 identification, ecology, and life history of the dragonflies and 
damselflies found in our region. This two-part workshop begins with an 
indoor session at Bylane Farm, where Tait will cover the key 
characteristics, behaviors, habitats, and evolutionary history of these 
remarkable insects. Participants will then head into the field with Tait
 to put their new knowledge into practice, honing their identification 
skills while exploring the wetland habitats these fascinating insects 
depend on.
