Why Mentoring Matters

Youth who have consistent, committed mentors are more likely to do well in school, graduate, pursue meaningful careers, and give back to others. A mentor provides an ear to listen, a voice to encourage, and a trusted presence that expands horizons and instills resilience.

Mentoring isn’t just advice — it’s lived example. It builds confidence, expands networks, and empowers young people to step into their future with purpose.

Lessons From Those Who Guided LeadersPhil Andrews, President of 100 Black Men of Eastern New York, Inc.

The president credits much of his own growth to the mentors who shaped his character and career. In reflections that echo many leaders’ experiences:

  • His father taught him that “if you live life with a closed fist, nothing can come into your life — to be successful you have to give in order to receive.”
  • A cherished aunt shared that living life with honesty, integrity, commitment, and compassion enables a person to truly make a difference.
  • A mentor whispered to him that “we all have a little Tuskegee in us,” reminding him to see greatness and legacy in every moment.
  • Another mentor often reminded him, “I never found a man that I could not like,” encouraging respect and dignity for every person.
  • A military leader taught that “heavy is the head that wears the crown,” underscoring the responsibility that comes with leadership and service.

“These lessons didn’t just sharpen my skills,” the president said. “They shaped my philosophy of leadership — that we rise by lifting others.”

In our space, In our time, we can, and must make a difference!
