Ghosts, Clocks & Zeros
Mike Racioppo's CB6 newsletter on Halloween parades, the marathon, the last day of early voting, and Vision Zero in the district.

Greetings,
I intended to type words about Halloween happenings from morning through night, tell you to vote, and maybe offer some marathon musings. I’ll still do that, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t say we lost a legend this week, Sir Patrick Stewart, who I think was the only knighted resident of the district. I never watched Star Trek, but he was great on The Simpsons, as Ahab, in Macbeth, and maybe most importantly when it comes to CB6, he had a fondness for Smiling Pizza.
Now, Halloween is always a big day in the district, but on a Saturday, more so. It starts with a community celebration in Thomas Greene Park from noon to 3, then four parades: the Urban Meadow Halloween Parade on the Columbia Street Waterfront, the Cobble Hill Halloween Parade at 4, the Pirates of the Gowanus at 5:30, and the Park Slope Civic Council Halloween Parade at 6:30. Park Slope Open Streets has music and trick-or-treating on 5th Avenue, and there’s much more, with block parties and lots of celebrations taking place on our streets, all at bkcb6.app/spookycb6.

Now, to the marathon musings I mentioned in the first paragraph. I overpromised, as I have no musings, but I do have a map that shows the route through the district and across the city, plus ways to get around. That can mean getting around to experience a great annual tradition, or getting around to do other things, like voting on the last day of early voting, 9 AM to 5 PM, and getting the first marathon voting sticker.
With all the different uses of our streets this weekend, it’s as good a time as any to remember we can choose to do better with them every day. The Mayor’s Office recently released Vision Zero Reimagined, 8 goals and 111 actions. As I tend to do with any policy or report, I broke it down by district, starting with ours, at bkcb6.app/visionzerocb6. You’ll find every action next to what this board has voted for since 2010, a map of the four priority corridors in CB6 and where people have been killed, and how we compare to the city’s other 58 districts. One spoiler: Court Street has 23 percent fewer crashes since the bike lane went in. The crash numbers are the NYPD’s, and thanks to CrashCount.nyc for visualizing them.

With that, I’ll say Happy Halloween, suggest you scroll down, read the rest, download, and whether you’re dressing up, running, cheering, voting, or none of the above, I wish you well.
