Beloved Central Park Pumpkin Flotilla Canceled: Report

CENTRAL PARK, NY — The enchanting fleet of jack-o'-lanterns will not float across Central Park's Harlem Meer this year after the beloved park tradition has gotten too popular for its own good, Time Out reports.

According to Time Out, the Central Park Conservancy says the event's existing setup can't safely handle the thousands of people who want to attend.

The yearly tradition, which has been at the Harlem Meer since 1993, invites New Yorkers to drop off their hand-carved pumpkins, which get loaded onto little connected floats with LED lights.

When the sun goes down, the glowing pumpkins travel across the water in rows, anchored by a kayaker.

The amusing tradition previously also included family-friendly arts and crafts projects, music, magic shows and more.

On the Central Park Conservancy's website, organizers urge New Yorkers to send in photos of their pumpkins in honor of the flotilla.

"We're summoning the spirit of the Pumpkin Flotilla! Although we can’t gather in person this year, we invite you to get inspired by Central Park's flowers, animals, and landscapes, and carve your own pumpkin this Halloween," organizers wrote.

According to Time Out, another Halloween event for the northern end of Central Park is in the works for the following year.
