Updated Mother’s Day Weekend Forecast In NYC

Rain and possible thunderstorms are expected during the weekend, forecasters said.

NEW YORK CITY — New Yorkers can expect a sunny and mild Friday before a soggy, stormy Saturday moves into the weekend, threatening Mother's Day travel, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday’s forecast calls for sunny skies and a high near 66 degrees, with west winds between 6 and 10 mph and gusts reaching up to 22 mph.

Clouds will increase Friday night, and there’s a slight chance of showers after 2 a.m. Overnight temperatures are expected to dip to around 53 degrees.

Saturday is shaping up to be the wettest day of the weekend, with showers expected throughout the day and possible thunderstorms developing after 2 p.m. Temperatures will stay cooler, with a high near 64 degrees. Forecasters say there’s a 90 percent chance of rain, with heavier rainfall possible during thunderstorms.

Conditions are expected to improve Saturday night as clouds gradually clear and temperatures fall to around 54 degrees.

The forecast improves just in time for Mother’s Day on Sunday, when skies are expected to turn mostly sunny, with temperatures climbing to a warm 76 degrees — ideal weather for brunches, park strolls and other outdoor celebrations across the city.

Overnight on Sunday, more rain is likely to return, mainly after 2 a.m., with a low around 52 degrees.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 66. West wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.

Friday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers after 2 a.m. Increasing clouds, with a low around 53. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Saturday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. High near 64. South wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 54.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76.

Sunday Night: Showers likely, mainly after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.
