Dogs Take Over LI Nursing Home For ‘Dog Days Of Summer’

COMMACK, NY — Residents at Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center got some four-legged company during the facility’s third annual “Dog Days of Summer” fashion show.

The Commack center welcomed about a dozen dogs and their owners for a runway-style “Canine Couture” fashion show and pet therapy session, bringing residents together for an afternoon of canine companionship.

The participating dogs belonged to Gurwin staff members, friends and residents of Fountaingate Gardens, Gurwin’s independent living community.

Puppies-in-training from the Guide Dog Foundation also attended the event and demonstrated some of the skills and focus involved in their training.

“Our annual dog show is part of Gurwin’s ongoing commitment to enriching resident quality of life through meaningful programs like pet therapy,” Nicole Hopper, chief therapeutic officer of the Gurwin Healthcare System, said. “A wagging tail, gentle nuzzle and playful paw in the hand make a real impact on our residents’ well-being.”

Each participating dog received a goodie bag filled with homemade treats. The event was held in Gurwin’s newly remodeled Simon Rainbow Room, where immersive projections featuring summer-themed visuals provided the backdrop for the fashion show.

“Our staff loved sharing their beloved dogs with the residents, and the addition of the service dog interaction brought even more joy to the celebration,” she said.
