Woman Arrested After Damaging Jesus Statue At East Islip Church: Police

EAST ISLIP, NY β€” A woman was arrested Wednesday after police said she damaged a statue of Jesus at an East Islip church last week.

According to Suffolk County police, the statue was damaged at St. Mary’s Church, at 118 East Main St., at about 11:15 p.m. on May 15.

Following an investigation by Hate Crimes Unit detectives, Deyonna Subert was arrested outside 221 W. Main St. in Bay Shore around 6:39 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Subert, 41, who police said is undomiciled, was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, police said.

She was held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Central Islip, police said.

β€œThe Suffolk County Police Department made an arrest this morning in relation to the damaging of a statue of Jesus Christ at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in East Islip," Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said. "All houses of worship are sacred places for our community to congregate and worship peacefully. I thank the SCPD for their diligence as the Department will remain vigilant for all religious institutions throughout the County.”
