One of the most iconic, important cultural and intellectual movements to come out of New York City, the Nuyorican Movement of the 1960s and 70s produced some of the best works of poetry, literature, art, and music of the 20th century – many of which have graced the stage of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a Lower East Side cultural cornerstone since 1973.

One of their many artists, the Chembo Corniel Trio, performed at the Tenement Museum’s Grand Reopening Block Party on June 12, 2021! Chembo Corniel Trio is a Latin Jazz trio, comprised of Grammy-nominated Chembo Corniel on the tumbadoras, Gilbert “Pulpo” Colon, Jr. on piano, and Alex “Apollo” Ayala on bass.
