Spring Is Hatching At The Garden City Public Library
Chicks are set to begin hatching on St. Patrick's Day.
GARDEN CITY, NY — Spring is about to get a little fluffier at the Garden City Public Library.
Chick eggs have arrived at the library, and tiny peeps are expected to start hatching on St. Patrick's Day.
The eggs arrived on Wednesday as part of the Library's annual Chick Incubation program – they are set to begin hatching on Tues. March 17. The chicks will remain at the library for about a week after they hatch.

Community members can try their luck by entering their name in the annual 'Name the Chick' contest for a chance to give one of the hatchlings its official name.
According to the library, the egg color is correlated to the type of chick inside. This year's batch includes four brown eggs and four white eggs.

The brown eggs will hatch into either Black Star chicks or Cinnamon Queens. Black Star females hatch all black, and the males hatch black with a white spot on their heads. Cinnamon Queen females hatch red, and the males hatch yellow. The white eggs are from a White Leghorn mix breed, and they will hatch yellow chicks.
