A Hidden Danger in Our Homes: One Garden City Family’s Struggle for Safety

As a mother, I have always taught my children that home should be our safest place. But for my family, that sanctuary became the source of an invisible, life-threatening crisis.
My family was recently forced to flee our home due to severe mold and mycotoxin toxicity. The very air we were breathing was poisoning us. What started as subtle health changes quickly spiraled into a devastating ordeal that left us sick, displaced, and faced with the heartbreaking loss of almost all of our belongings.
Navigating this has been the hardest journey of our lives. When you lose everything to environmental toxicity, you don't just lose furniture or clothes; you lose your sense of security. Unfortunately, we have found that in these situations, accountability is hard to come by, and the financial burden of protecting your family’s health falls entirely on the victims.
We have now secured a new, safe home, but the road to recovery is long. Our savings were exhausted in the process of ensuring my children could breathe clean air again. We are currently working to bridge the gap and rebuild what was lost.
I am sharing our story here not only because we need the community’s help, but because I want to ensure no other family in our area has to endure this. Mycotoxin poisoning is real, it is often invisible, and it is frequently misunderstood. My goal is to use our experience to advocate for better awareness and safer living standards for all renters in Long Island.
I’ve documented our journey and the realities of this crisis on my social media pages @jessicarudin on instagram and Facebook.
If you are in a position to help, any support—whether it’s a donation or simply sharing our story to raise awareness—would mean the world to my family.
